Flash Meter and Light Meter 1.8

This review assesses a sophisticated device that functions as a true flash meter and light meter, boasting an impressive accuracy of 0.1 EV. Notably, it includes a Depth of Field Calculator and the capability to create Lighting Studio diagrams. However, it is important to highlight that the flash and light meter functions operate exclusively with an external cell, as the phone's sensor does not provide the necessary accuracy for these measurements.

The device allows for measurements in both incident and reflected light, displaying values in various units such as EV, LUX, foot-candle, cd/m², and foot lambert. It offers a speed range from 1/8000s to 60s, aperture settings from F1 to F90, and sensitivity levels spanning from 25 to 819200 ISO. Features such as exposure compensation and the use of ND filters are also available.

Light Meter Specifications:

  • Range of incident light measurement (ISO 100): 0.5 to 1.9 million LUX, 19.5 -3 EV.
  • Range of reflected light measurement (ISO 100): 1-1000000 cd/m², 3-20 EV.

Flash Meter Specifications:

  • Range of incident light measurement (ISO 100): 100-2300000 LUX, 5 to 20 EV.
  • Range of reflected light measurement (ISO 100): 500-10000000 cd/m², 12 to 25 EV.
  • Features a jack socket for flash sync and automatic detection of lighting flash.
  • Allows for accumulation of lighting data.

While smartphones and tablets cannot measure incident light accurately and have a precision limit of approximately 1/3 EV for reflected light, they are insufficient for measuring brief lighting flashes. An external module costing less than €60 (around $80) is necessary for precise measurements. This module connects via Bluetooth to the smartphone.

The compact design of the module enhances portability, allowing it to fit easily in a pocket or attach securely to audio jacks on smartphones or tablets. Users can even wear it around their necks during shooting sessions.

The integrated Depth of Field Calculator eliminates the need for additional applications, offering functionally for both standard and macro lenses. Furthermore, the Lighting Studio Photo (LSP) feature facilitates seamless saving of all settings from photo shoots for future replication. Users can easily transition between flash meter/light meter mode and LSP functionality while enjoying features such as:

  • Reading stored diagrams/schemes.
  • Saving diagrams on the smartphone or tablet's SD card.
  • Automatic backup functionality upon exiting and resuming later.
  • A wide array of item options for customization.
  • Adjustable position, size, orientation, and text for each object.
  • Grid display options including none, large, medium, or fine, with backup image functionality in JPG format.

This multilingual application currently supports English, French, and Spanish. Additional languages can be integrated upon request through email submissions of translated GUI words.
